Having been away for just over a week, three main things have happened:  first, the North end gym exit doors have been removed, and a new temporary door is installed on the West side of the gym.  Second, the excavation 'hole' is particularly deep at the West end of the site - And to reinforce the gym wall and prepare to have the South wall of the new school secured, 'shoring' has taken place under the gym, extending out into what will be future under the new school.

Over the coming 2 weeks, March 24 - April 4, we will see:
  1. Completing of the shoring work
  2. Completion of the exit door and the framing work around it
  3. Completion of the removal of debris down the remaining 10 feet (to a max. of 18')
  4. Laying the foundation forms for the west end of the school.
The site also now has its own source of power with Hydro connecting the lines to the power pole last Friday - that means that there is heat and light inside the trailer on site - YEAH!

This quickly disappearing landscape captures so much of what has been happening these past 4 weeks – workers digging, moving and digging, and moving some more, kids playing – and by the time we return from our break, we expect that all of the ‘upper field’ will have disappeared.

Thank you to everyone for your tremendous support and encouragement.

For those of us blessed to 'view' the daily changes that are occuring on our construction site, it is right to say that we are thrilled! Between soil being removed, great big old rocks being excavated, evidence of the first school's foundation piling up and tons of debris being carted away each day, we see progress.

We are so pleased with the work that YELLOWRIDGE Construction is doing, and grateful for the many ways in which they are ensuring that our site is safe.

While we are away on Spring Break, March 12 - 26, everyone will see the hole growing deeper, more movement of trucks carting away debris, and the shoring up of the north end of the gymnasium to prepare for the laying of the foundation for the new school building along 7th Avenue. We have been told that there will be an increase in the volume of noise that such work will generate for a short period of time.

Please keep the construction team in your prayers - they are laying the foundation for years of continued Catholic education in our Parish!

Our new school construction site changes every day, and sometimes, multiple times on a given day.
This photo represents the installation of a power pole which was recently installed on the site to draw power from the transformer across the street on 7th Avenue.

We know that the construction trailer installed by Yellowridge on the site will both light up and warm up once HYDRO connects the site to the power source.  LET THERE BE LIGHT (and HEAT)!

PS. Thanks to one of our "readers" we found out that the ANVIL ISLAND bricks came from a brick foundry on Anvil Island.  The foundry was in operation from 1910 through to approximately 1912... so our little school was one of the BC sites that grew from this foundry.  Isn't that amazing?

Sunday 2 March 2014

With just over 20 loads of debris and soil being removed from our site each day, our upper field area is methodically disappearing.  We've been told that this process is slowed by the reality that Yellowridge has only one entrance/exit access location on Arbutus Street at the old parking lot gate. This means that a truck being loaded by the digger has to completely exit the site before the next truck can enter, turn around to be facing the exit, be loaded and exit itself.
In the past week, the digger 'found' part of the old foundation of the original school -
to be expected.  What also has been unearthed are original bricks stamped "ANVIL ISLAND".  Maybe someone could help us find out their history?
